Prescription Changes & Renewals
…are provided during regularly scheduled appointments only, to allow for appropriate monitoring and discussion of beneficial as well as any unintended effects. With the exception of controlled substances requiring a written prescription each month, I call in prescriptions on a separate speaker phone during sessions so that you are assured I have completed the process. Please check the labels on your supplies carefully and check with your pharmacist if it appears that planned refills are not on file to cover the time until your next visit. Due to the high volume many pharmacies experience, there may be errors or discrepancies. I do not respond to computer-generated fax refill requests but instead rely on you to notify me timely if there appears to be an unanticipated shortage. At no time are prescriptions for controlled substances refilled, replaced or substituted prior to the next appointment.
If circumstances require you to reschedule for a later date, please review your prescription supply and notify me at least three business days in advance so that I may provide an interim prescription if needed. Please note that fees apply for services of five minutes or more, when rendered outside your regularly scheduled appointment.
Prescription Prior Authorizations
Increasingly, many insurance companies have engaged third party prescription drug benefit programs which enforce an array of restrictions on medication choices and dispensing alternatives. When possible, I recommend that we navigate restrictions and appeals to the point of approval during regularly scheduled sessions.
If a third party imposes a “prior” authorization requirement on an established, successful prescription I may have to find time to pursue the matter urgently; any preliminary inquiries you make with the pharmacy, your insurance company and third party pharmacy benefit entities may decrease the time and cost required for me to resolve the difficulty.
